Advanced Energy Announces Significant Service Infrastructure Investments in Asia

FORT COLLINS, Colo., May 14, 2002—Advanced Energy Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq: AEIS) today announced it is making important investments in its product service and support infrastructure in Taiwan, China and Singapore by opening three new Class 1000 cleanrooms to better support its mass flow controller (MFC) customers in Asia. With the purchase of Aera Japan Ltd. in January 2002 and EMCO Flow Systems in January 2001, Advanced Energy has become a leader in the semiconductor MFC market worldwide. These new cleanrooms demonstrate the depth of Advanced Energy’s commitment to immediate, local support for Advanced Energy’s Aera flow products.

All three new support facilities are strategically located close to the major industrial areas where Advanced Energy’s end-user Aera customers have production faculties. The new Hsinchu, Taiwan, facility, which opened in April 2002, contains a 50-square-meter Class 1000 cleanroom dedicated to Aera flow product service and support. It also supports Advanced Energy’s power, thermal and source products.

Advanced Energy’s original Taiwan office in Taipei—opened in December 1999—will continue to provide general sales and some service support for power products. The new cleanrooms in Singapore and the Pudong area of Shanghai, China, will open in the third quarter of 2002. Each will contain a Class 1000 cleanroom for Aera flow product service and support. Chinese corporate sales and most support will transfer to the new Shanghai facility from the Shenzhen office—opened in November 2000—which will remain a sales office. In Singapore, the Advanced Energy cleanroom will be operated in conjunction with the company’s regional distributor, APP Systems.

“Asian countries, China in particular, are vital markets for all Advanced Energy products and services,” said Doug Schatz, chairman and chief executive officer of Advanced Energy. “Our investment in Aera flow products is vital to our strategic goals. These service and support investments are essential for us to maintain and grow our flow market leadership in Asia.”

“MFC customers with high-tech production facilities in major industrial areas require cleanroom service capability as near to their facilities as possible,” said Chris Near, Advanced Energy’s director of Asian operations. “These new cleanrooms in Asia let us provide extremely rapid turnaround for flow product service. In addition, we’re now positioned to continually grow our support capability for power, thermal, source and data management products in these critical customer locations.”
