Advanced Energy Hosts SEGIS Technology Demonstration for Deploying High-Penetration Photovoltaics on the Grid

Industry Experts Introduce Synchrophasor-Based Islanding Detection and Advanced Inverter Control Functionally in Live Demo

FORT COLLINS, Colo., September 14, 2011Advanced Energy Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq: AEIS), today announced its SEGIS Technology Demonstration, which will be held Tuesday, September 20, in Portland, Oregon. During the event, which is free to attend, Advanced Energy (AE) and its Solar Energy Grid Integration System (SEGIS) partners will showcase the technologies developed during its Stage 3 SEGIS contract, which AE was awarded in September 2010. The SEGIS program is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Energy Technologies Program (SETP), and aims to develop technologies that make solar power cost-competitive with traditional power generation sources.

By partnering with other experts in the field—Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Portland General Electric, Northern Plains Power Technologies and Sandia National Laboratories—AE has developed advanced technologies that address key challenges facing high PV penetration into today's electrical grid. During the event, attendees will have the opportunity to view a live demonstration of synchrophasor-based islanding detection as well as advanced inverter control functionality which the team has integrated into grid-tied solar inverters to enable performance improvements both at the PV site as well as at the distribution feeder level.

In addition to the technology demonstration, Kevin Lynn with the U.S. Department of Energy will discuss the progress the SEGIS program has made toward its mission to 1) integrate high penetrations of distributed photovoltaic power onto the grid, and 2) place utility-scale solar in a better position to satisfy even the most aggressive Renewable Portfolio Standards.
